OBJECTIVE: To identify a good tree planting location and suitable tree for planting.
GRADE: K-12
MATERIALS: Trees: bare root seedlings, containerized seedlings, potted trees and shovel
PROCEDURES:
- Consider temperature, moisture, light, pests, soil and air pollution when selecting your tree.
- Select a suitable tree.
- Obtain permission to plant the tree.
Follow these steps:
- Uptake tree and soak in water 3 - 6 hours
- Dig wide hole so roots have room to spread
- Plant tree the same depth it was when you obtained it
- Pack some soil around lower roots, then shovel in remaining soil

- Soak with water, then place mulch around tree: don't touch trunk; water every 10 days the first year, if the weather is dry
PARENT/CHILD EXPERIENCE: Parents can select trees or other plants with their children and plant in their year or care for the plants in their home.
