The Mayas of Mexico and Central and South America studied the movement of stars and planets to create an early calendar that helped them improve farming and other tasks. From the top of their pyramids these early engineers focused two crossed sticks on one point on the horizon. Then they recorded movements of the sun, moon and planets in relation to their natural points on the horizon.
Their records yielded a 365-day calendar called Haab. Many Hispanic engineers and scientists continue the legacy of studying space; among them are astronauts Sidney Gutierrez, Franklin Change-Diaz, Ellen Ochoa, Michael Lopez-Alegria, and Franklin Caldiero. Mayan pyramids are uncovered by archaeologists. Trees are planted to replace every tree cut down while uncovering the past archaeological sites.
